The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense was founded on October 15, 1966, in Oakland CA by Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton, 2 college students. They grew quickly, running a nationwide-first free breakfast program for students; health clinics; and neighborhood safety patrols. They were targeted by the FBI’s COINTELPRO initiative, which planted fake news stories, conducted psychological warfare, and succeeded in discrediting and bringing down Panther members and chapters.
